Cold season has hit- and unless you have an amazingly resilient immune system, you’re probably going to find yourself feeling congested and helpless at some point within the next few weeks (as I am feeling at this very moment!) but with these tips, you’ll make it through soon- I promise!
1. Get lots of rest!
Call in sick to work and treat yourself to an afternoon of movie-watching and relaxation. Let’s face it- you weren’t going to get much done anyway with those congested sinuses and itchy eyes. Rest your brain, and rest your eyes. Take a break from tv and internet surfing to just lie in bed and rest.
2. Get yourself some drugs- the GOOD stuff.
If your symptoms involve a runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing, get yourself some Sudafed, ASAP! It does wonders. But-make sure it’s the one with pseudophedrine- the one you have to get from a pharmacist that requires an id and sometimes your address. Why? Because this stuff is POWERFUL, and contains some of the components of methamphetamine. If acquired in large quantities, can be used to produce the drug commonly known as crystal meth. It can also be highly addictive. But don’t worry, as long as you are taking the proper dosage of the medication for no longer than a week, you’ll be fine. In fact, you’ll feel a million times more capable to deal with life and all it’s stresses, which is a HUGE bonus when you are dealing with a nasty cold!
3. Don’t forget to eat!
You may not feel like you have a particularly ravenous appetite at this time (partially due to the fact you have pretty much lost all sense of smell), but making sure that you maintain proper nutrition is essential in the healing process. What you choose will depend on personal preference, but for me, spicy food is the main thing that I am craving when sick, especially in the form of soup! If you are lucky enough to live in Taiwan, Japan, China or any major U.S. city, hotpot (or in Japan, Shabu-Shabu) is a great cold-busting treat! The delicious hot broth paired with a healthy serving of vegetables is a great combination to help fight congestion and get plenty of vitamins in the process! I am lucky enough to live right on the border of Chinatown in Oakland, so I just popped down the street this afternoon, and got a nice big helping of super spicy hotpot to go! Also don’t forget to drink ridiculous amounts of water- it will only help you feel better!
4. Distract Yourself.
If resting is only making you focus on just how crappy you feel, how little you’re getting done, and how mad you are at whomever you might be blaming your sickness on at this moment, take a couple of hours to distract yourself with some good ol’ Netflix instant play. I even handpicked a few just for you that are great for a cruddy sick day!
If you like science fiction…I recommend Vanilla Sky (only the Tom Cruise remake is available on Netflix, but it’s pretty good!) or Antiviral (which is slightly creepier).
If you like romantic comedies….I recommend Timer, Kissing Jessica Stein, and Love Actually. All cute, sweet, feel-good movies.
If you like just plain ol’ comedies…I recommend or The First Wives Club, and Young Adult. Both funny, without being too over-the-top.
If you like coming of age comedies…I recommend Charlie Bartlett and Clueless.
If you like over-the-top comedies… I recommend Pootie Tang (possibly the most ridiculous movie ever made), Superstar (the second most ridiculous) Bruno, Zoolander and Death at a Funeral. All totally hilarious.
If you like dramas…I recommend Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and New York, I Love You. Both offer a creative new way to look at love and relationships.
If you like artistic foreign dramas…I recommend The Artist and Blanca Nieves. Both are a visual treat, and neither story is too heavy to deal with when you are already feeling down.
If you like documentaries…I recommend Diana Vreeland, The Eye Has To Travel and Animal Odd Couples. You need cute and fun when you’re sick, not heavy and depressing!
5. Get Something Done!
It doesn’t have to be anything overwhelming and huge, but just forcing a little bit of productivity on yourself will help you feel less stressed with you’ve made it through your cold and your to-do list still stands without a single check! So check off one item, maybe two, then you can get back to resting!
